THE GIRLS FROM ALCYONE: MERCHANTMAN
(a novelette from the world of Alcyone)
The Girls From Alcyone is the continuing story of two very special girls who find themselves at the heart of a conflict spanning more than forty worlds.
THIS WEEK: Last week we left Sigrid tumbling through space with a little less than nine minutes to live. This week, let's roll back the clock forty-eight hours.

Part Two of Merchantman (48 hours earlier):
White light gave way to the blackness of space; like snow melting away, large white droplets scattered forming into billions of individual stars. Her warp jump complete, the Ōmi Maru swung around, blasting toward the heart of the alpha Phoenicis system and her destination, the Konoe Transfer Station. Few ships were in orbit; the small outpost appeared a cold and lonely place, a dull metallic disc drifting alone in the barren wastes of deep space.
It was here that they would find the only people outside Federation space still willing to trade with them; the Merchantmen.

The Chief nudged Sigrid directing her attention to another ship moving into a berth off their port beam. She was a freighter, but far grander than the likes of the Ōmi Maru. She looked close to one hundred and fifty meters, roughly the same size and tonnage as their ship, but she had a stately flair to her, her thrusters painted in bright gold and red, her long hull featuring distinctive red piping. Sigrid scanned her markings; she registered as the Merchantman.
"Our contact," the Chief Engineer said. "Right on time."
As always, great descriptions...although I have a feeling something is going to go wrong, considering everyone is right on time to this meeting.
ReplyDeleteThey'll be fine. They're just on a shopping trip, there to pick up some milk, eggs - usual stuff you need to stock your secret, hidden homeworld.
DeleteSpaceship porn! Amazing detail on the vessel and a nice ominous feel coming through. Love the "Sigrid" image - exactly like I pictured her. Very 'Sucker-Punchy' :D
ReplyDeleteThanks! I just got the first of the new concept art today (started working on the new cover). I think the artist nailed her on her first try, so that's got me excited. Can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
DeleteAwesome descriptions. You have to worry about exchanges made in isolated, out of the way places.
ReplyDeleteI'm with TK. The Sigrid art is fantastic! How very exciting!
But ... that man in the dark alley seemed so nice!
DeleteOh Cary... Do I dare ask about your alley-encounters...? ;P
DeleteI've been told I'm VERY popular amongst the alley-types. (or was it that I just look the sort?) Can't remember which now.
Deletegreat description of the ship - i really got a sense of it. Looking forward to see it all fall apart. Cool art!!
ReplyDeleteNo point in building 'em up if you can't knock 'em down, right!
DeleteI KNOW something is going to go wrong.
ReplyDeleteTK said it best - spaceship porn! The details are awesome. Too bad it gets blown up in 48 hours....
ReplyDeleteNice looking ship! Too bad it's gonna be scrap.
ReplyDeleteThey can rebuild it. Better, stronger,,,
Delete"let's roll back the clock forty-eight hours."?! You're a cruel man, Mr Caffrey!
ReplyDeleteGreat snippet. Can't help wondering over the ship's name, though. Not anything to do with the Kobayashi Maru?
You can't have a 'no win scenario' without a Maru! This is scifi! I mean, for cryin'...
Delete;)
This doesn't look good...
ReplyDeleteBut she's such a sexy ship! What could possibly go wrong?
