OF SWORDS AND SUKO II (posting from Freelancer): SciFiFanSat

Posting from my WiP

THE GIRLS FROM ALCYONE: Freelancer

The Girls From Alcyone is the continuing story of two very special young women who find themselves at the heart of a conflict spanning more than forty worlds.

LAST WEEK: Sigrid came home

Sigrid continues her inspection of Suko's sword.

Carefully, Sigrid withdrew the blade. The steel was now fully restored by Suko; oiled, polished and powdered, it gleamed in the dark. Suko had taken care to repair the leather handle and restore the gold inlay that had worn away, returning some of its lost majesty. She swung the sword now, felt its weight in her grip, and marvelled at the balance. It was a weapon that begged conflict, deadly in the hands of one trained to use it.
"Now, there's something you don't see every day."
Sigrid spun about, nearly dropping the sword; Suko stood behind her, leaning in the doorway--Sigrid realized how silly she must appear swinging Suko's sword about dressed only in her undergarments.
Walking toward her, Suko took the sword from her hands and placed it back on the shirasaya.
"You want to be careful with that. My girlfriend gave it to me."

    1. Did you read last week's snip? You KNOW how this section got in there, don't you! :)

  2. Oh, that Suko! :-)
Not sure how a sword gleams in the dark, but still a great snippet (swords and unmentionables, how can you beat that?). Can't wait for this one to be out there in its entirety.

  3. I think I know where this one is going. *wink*

    1. Well, I suppose it's pretty obvious. Suko's been PVR'ing all their favourite programs while Sigrid's been gone. They'll just sit down on the couch for some quality viewing time.

  4. Love that phrase: begged conflict. Conjures up ancient battles and magic and all that exciting stuff.
Are you done yet? Are ya, are ya?

    1. No (sigh). I was still rewriting the post-climax scene yesterday. And I've still got to do the denouement. It is basically done, though (of course, there's still rewriting and edits to come). I started on the cover art today though.

    2. Oooo! Cover art...more exciting. After Merchantman's reveal, I cannot wait (either) for the Freelancer reveal!! Eeee!!

    3. The artist just started working on Suko today. I'll be very curious to see what she comes up with.

  5. What a well crafted, detail rich scene. Still digging the art. Keep it coming!

  6. Love the sword and underwear. Any UV light to explain the gleam?

    1. Thanks. The light source is mentioned outside the ten sentences. I'll try to be more careful when I make my sentence selections.

  7. Underwear sword fight time! Great snippet!

  8. Sigrid thinks it looks silly when she's swinging her girlfriend's sword in her underwear? I beg to differ. I'm sure Suko does, too. Love getting to see bits of sketches! So excited!

    1. Of course WE know Sigrid doesn't look silly - but she'll never believe it.

  9. You know she's a keeper when your girlfriend buys you a sword as a present--and later swings it around in her underwear. I love that visual.

  10. I love the last line. I actually laughed out loud and my husband gave me an odd look. As always, I cannot wait to see what happens next. Thanks for sharing!

Side Note: Do you draw the drawings. They're really good and I look forward to them almost as much as the snippet. :)

  11. Thanks! The drawings are, unfortunately, not be me. They are by Miriam Williams. I met her at my local tea shop of all places. She is extremely talented. We're working on developing the comic version. Hopefully she'll have more stuff soon (I'm running out).
