The Girls From Alcyone II: The Gilded Age

For those not familiar with TGfA, here's the premise in a nutshell: Taken from her home as a young girl, Sigrid Novak is one of a select and highly trained group of genetically (and bionically) enhanced girls. Both hunted and coveted (as a military asset and scientific curiosity), Sigrid and her friends have fled fled the Federation to make a new life for themselves on a secret and distant planet (a secret that, perhaps, won't stay secret for long).

This Week: Sigrid's Mistress, the Lady Hitomi Kimura, has just received some terrible and tragic news--news that begs Sigrid to finally ask the question: why has Hitomi made her?

"You asked me, why—why I made you," Hitomi said, and her thin fingers squeezed Sigrid's, holding her tight. "But I think you already know the answer."
Sigrid knelt by Hitomi's side. For just a moment, she felt the familiar conflict within her. This fragile woman before her—her Mistress—the very woman who had taken her from her family and everything she knew and held dear. This woman had trained her, altered her in profound and terrifying ways. In so many respects Sigrid knew she should hate her, resent her, at the very least. But she couldn't shake the unmistakable kinship she held for Hitomi. From the moment she'd met the Lady Hitomi Kimura, from the first moment she'd set foot on Aquarii, Sigrid had known, she was home; here by this woman's side, this was where she was meant to be.
And Hitomi was correct; Sigrid did know the answer, she knew  why her Mistress had done what she'd done.

"I will be your instrument of vengeance, Mistress. I will kill them all."

  1. Whew! Glad you brought in that last line when you did...was worried we'd get into something all emotional and stuff, and then whammo! Great snippet...loved it! :-D

  2. I love Sigrid. Nice snippet. I love the dynamic between Sigrid and Hitomi. It's complex and uneasy at times. That really comes through in this snippet.

    1. It's funny for me to think that Hitomi wasn't even in the first few versions of the story (of course, without her there'd BE no story).

It's just funny sometimes how things work out sometimes.

  3. Great snippet! Beautifully written. Heidi speaks very highly of your book so it's in my TBR stack.

  4. Well done! Now, I'm left wondering what happened to Hitomi and who did it to her. Go get 'em, Sigrid!

  5. You captured this moment beautifully. In a few short sentences, you presented their close relationship and what it meant. Great Job. Can't wait to read more!

    1. Thanks so much. I'm always worried (in these more emotional moments) of going overboard. But that's cause I'm such a sentimental fool.

  6. Kill them all!! Yes! Now we're talking... Had to agree with T.M. and got a little: okay, we're getting to the sentimental mushy stuff. Good save. :)

    1. I've been struggling with the tone and direction of this new novel, but unleashing Sigrid on the galaxy to wreak havoc feels, somehow, just right :)

    1. Thanks! And, me too. I wish I was done with the first draft, but I keep throwing everything out and starting over (should I admit that publicly? lol).

    1. Me too - even if it is one of 'those' lines where, after I write it, I roll my eyes and give my head a good shake. (Oh, Cary, you can't really have her say that!)
