The Girls From Alcyone II: Vengeance

This Week: Oh, it's so exciting! In this scene, a mysterious fighter craft plummets out of control toward the surface of a mysterious world (it's all very mysterious). Will the pilot survive this plunge to certain death? Who is she? What is she up to? I don't know!!

The engines of the aging Junco fighter sputtered to life, only to die once again. Five more alarms sounded in the small cockpit. Brilliant ambers and reds blazed across the pilot's heads-up-display, very nearly blinding her in the process. The ground was rushing up quickly now, all too eager to greet the freely-tumbling fighter-craft.
"Shit," the pilot said.
"Did you try the choke?" an infuriatingly-calm voice said over the com. "Maybe we can give you a jump start—a good, old-fashioned push."
"Not now, Chloe—I'm a little busy."
"And no crashing my fighter. I'm not at all happy about what you did to my carrier."
"Yes, Chloe."
"If you crash, I'm going to make you go back to calling me Admiral—or Commodore. Er, something important sounding!"
The pilot rolled her eyes, unseen behind the shining and mirrored faceplate of her helmet. "I'll see you on the ground, Chloe."

  1. Uh oh! Pull up! Pull up!

I can't wait for this one to come out. Any ideas on a release date yet?

    1. I'd be lying if I said I was on schedule. In fact, I'm WAY behind. *sigh. But the damn book keeps getting bigger. The good news is that I'm way ahead on book three (going to chop this one up - I don't want it more than 80k words this time).

I'm still hoping for a late summer release. But, as they often say in the gaming industry, it will be released when it's done! (and not a moment sooner) lol

  2. Almost makes you wish they had a Ballistic Recovery System installed... :-)

    1. They had to take that out - too much weight.

  3. Just what you need; Chloe prattling in your ear as the ground rushes up to have a dance!
    Great snippet, Cary!

  4. Ohhh!! Exciting. Somehow, I think the pilot will be okay - those old Junco fighters come with great old-fashioned crash-guards and airbags and stuff.

  5. Loving the details in this: the amber lights, mirrored helmet. The action and mystery are fun and breaking it up with humorous dialogue is perfect.

  6. Sounds like you've got a vent locked in the open position causing flameout. I hear that happens sometimes with those old Juncos when they hit atmo. Bad hydraulics... and hitting the gravity well doesn't help. Good luck recovering after that. Hope you've got a decent ejection system.

  7. I like the threat on calling Chloe admiral or commodore.

  8. And tumbling on top of all that? Wow, I'm impressed the pilot's abole to talk.

  9. Pshaw. This mysterious pilot should stop her bellyaching. It's not like she's falling into atmo, in a flat spin, with an alien race firing a EMP shockwave weapon at her, while the killer of her crew members is getting away. I mean, at least throw in some asteroids, or have her break a nail. Something SERIOUS!
