This Week: Posting from "The Girls From Alcyone II: Freelancer."

FUGITIVE: Snippet IV

Still continuing last week's snippet (and still aboard the TGV with Dr. Farrington...

Dr. Farrington felt the slight shift in the cabin, barely perceptible. He checked his wrist watch again; they would be decelerating now, coming into New Shēnzhèn. He reached for his bag. From here, it would be a simple matter to lose himself in the crowds, find a quiet place to hole-up, rest, and yes, work. No one would look for him here. No one would notice. Here, he could finish his work, unobserved, untethered, without the nonsense of wars or rebellion; and when he was ready, when he was done, he would name his price, he would—
"Excuse me, Dr. Farrington?"
Dr. Farrington gave a start, felt the meaty hand that gripped his wrist. For the first time he took notice of his cabin companion; the man slumbered soundly no more.

  1. Oh yeah - he was going to fade to black, become invisible, totally impossible to find - lol excellent snippet, I laughed at the first line of dialogue. Good job :)

  2. So much for his plan at anonymity. I like all the negatives (No one, no one, unobserved, untethered, without) and then the reversal being "slumbered no more". Very nicely done.

  3. Great snippet...still looking forward to this one, though hoping to see our girls again soon in one of these snippets. :-)

  4. The price of being a genius scientist - recognized even on alien planets. A meaty hand gripping a wrist - never a good thing. Great cliffhanger! I can't wait to see who it is.

  5. Nice juxtaposition of his internal monologue as he's making his plans to be anonymous and diabolical and then the reminder that he's not anonymous. He's just as frail and mortal as the rest of us.

I'm with TM. When we gonna get some Sigrid?

  6. Oh nooo!! This can't be good. But wait, is Dr. Farrington a goodie or a baddie, because if he was a baddie, this will be his comeuppance, right?

    1. Well, he wasn't very good in the last book, that's for sure.

  7. And of course the owner of the meaty hand COULD want to help him ...

  8. Ooops. Never forget to watch seemingly sleeping fellow passengers... when, you know, you're plotting.

  9. How ominous. I wonder what happens next!
